Vets Reported Being ‘too slow’ at Responding to Brucella Canis

According to an animal health specialist, the updated risk evaluation for Brucella canis is “really game-changing” in how the industry approaches the illness. 

However, worries were also expressed about how behind the industry has been in handling the increase of cases. 

Almost 200 cases of Brucella Canis, a contagious bacterial infection that affects reproductive organs, have been reported since the start of 2020. A significant increase to just 3 the previous year.  

Owners of imported dogs, thought to contribute to most confirmed cases, have expressed discomfort with euthanasia being the predominant option.  

Although no concrete decision has been made, Eleanor Brown, the UK’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, has suggested the UK may be looking at stricter import regulations in the future.  

Paul Higgs, CVS’ head veterinary officer, acknowledged the possibility of false positive results but maintained that testing did enable veterinarians to safeguard clients, employees, and themselves. 

Liz Mullineaux, British Veterinary Association deputy chief, announced that her organization is working with the SPVS, BVNA, and BSAVA to formulate a collaborative policy on the illness. In the upcoming year, the policy is anticipated to be issued.
