VNUS Medical Technologies’ Closure procedure commended

7th April 2009

VNUS Medical Technologies is “delighted” that the NHS National Innovation Centre has recognised the benefits its Closure procedure brings to hospitals and patients.

A number of studies have proved this minimally-invasive treatment to offer a number of advantages over other conventional vein-stripping surgery for individuals with varicose veins and venous reflux.

Freeing up hospital operating theatres and reducing treatment and recovery times are the main benefits for both patients and the NHS, the body said.

The procedure will be showcased at the forthcoming National Health Service EXPO, which will be held at the ExCel in London, as an example of “select innovative technology”.

Brian Farley, president and chief executive officer of VNUS Medical Technologies, praised the support from the NHS, Charing Cross NHS Hospital and Ian Franklin that had helped the company with the technique.

“We are continuing our programmes to train more surgeons in the VNUS Closure procedure so that more UK patients can benefit from this proven technology,” he commented.

Since the system was first used in Europe at the start of 1998, over 350,000 patients around the world have undergone the procedure.
