Waltham Study Maps 983 New Canine Microbiome Strains

Waltham Petcare Science Institute researchers have delivered what they describe as the most comprehensive microbiome resource in companion animal research to date, identifying 983 new canine-specific bacterial strains via meta-genomic sequencing. Reported by Vet Times on 28 July 2026 via a podcast interview with senior research manager Phil Watson, the study signals a shift toward personalised, microbiome-based veterinary care based on individual pet gut composition.

The Waltham team used meta-genomic sequencing to analyse more than 500 canine faecal samples, identifying 983 previously undescribed canine-specific bacterial strains and lifting overall bacterial identification to approximately 90%. That represents a dramatic increase in what was previously identifiable and gives researchers a more complete picture of the canine microbiome, including how it changes in response to health and disease progression. Watson framed the findings as clarifying the role of the microbiome in canine immunity, wellbeing and longevity, and as opening the door to diagnostic tools that could predict pets at risk of developing specific diseases.

 

Watson positioned tailored microbiome interventions as the future of veterinary care, drawing parallels with the emergence of microbiome-based recommendations in human healthcare and noting that the veterinary field is a little behind but has clear potential. Prebiotic, probiotic and increasingly postbiotic ingredients were highlighted as the primary tools to modify gut composition. A healthy microbiome is characterised by broad bacterial diversity, significant health-associated bacteria and low levels of pathogenic species. The gut-brain axis was flagged as an important focus for future research, with further work also underway on the oral and skin microbiomes.

The commercial signal is a personalised pet nutrition and diagnostic category taking shape at the intersection of Mars-owned research infrastructure, veterinary practice diagnostics and functional pet food. Waltham’s Mars ownership positions the group directly for downstream Royal Canin product development. Expect Hill’s Pet Nutrition (Colgate-Palmolive), Nestlé Purina, MSD Animal Health and Zoetis to sharpen their own microbiome analytics and personalised nutrition plays.
