Wrigley finds gum chewing can boost academic performance

30th April 2009

Wrigley has asserted parents and youngsters continuously try to find ways to improve grades in school as the testing environment becomes more competitive.

It made this comment after research found chewing gum could have a positive effect on academic grades.

A study discovered that children who consumed the product performed better in a maths test than those who did not.

Pupils who chewed during lessons and while completing homework for 14 weeks before the exam achieved three points on average higher than their counterparts.

Wrigley noted how previous investigations have shown that “gum chewing can help reduce stress, improve alertness and relieve anxiety”.

The company stated the findings could be meaningful “when related to small steps that can lead to better academic performance”.

Working with independent researchers, the Wrigley Science Institute conducts research to find out about the potential health and wellness benefits that could come with chewing gum.

Appetite and weight management, oral health, situational stress and focus are the main areas it looks at.

The company operates in over 40 locations and distributes its brands in more than 180 countries.
