Wyeth Pharmaceuticals publishes positive Premarin data

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has published data which supports the daily and twice-weekly use of Premarin (conjugated estrogens) vaginal cream.

In a statement, the company explained that the treatment is useful in relieving some of the symptoms of moderate-to-severe vaginal and vulvar atrophy, including painful intercourse.

Wyeth’s data was obtained in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that lasted for 12 weeks and was followed up with a 40-week open-label stage.

Dr Gloria Bachmann, principal author of the study, said that the information gleaned from the study should help postmenopausal women and their healthcare professionals in terms of the way in which vaginal atrophy should be treated.

“The study also supported daily use of Premarin vaginal cream 0.5 g to treat postmenopausal vaginal dryness,” she added.

In recent days, Wyeth announced that it has signed a deal with Catalyst Biosciences which will see the two firms develop factor VIIa products for the treatment of haemophilia and associated conditions.
