Wyeth wins hormone therapy trial

Wyeth has announced that it has won a case of Merle and Steven Simon v Wyewth heard by the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and heard before the honourable Nitza I Quinones Alejandro.

The trial related to Premarin (conjugated oestrogen tablets USP) and Prempro (conjugated oestrogens /medroxyprogesterone acetate tablets) – treatments approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Merle and Steven Simon were represented at the trial by James Morris of Brent Coon & Associates and James J Binns of James J Binns PC at the case which began on April 17th this year.

Heidi K Hubbard, a partner at Williams & Connolly representing Wyeth, said: “The evidence presented demonstrated that Wyeth acted responsibly by performing and supporting studies that examined the known and potential benefits and risks of hormone therapy.”

She added that the company also acting responsibly in keeping physicians, patients and the FDA informed of the potential risks and benefits involved in administration of its hormone therapy treatments.

Ms Hubbard stated that the decision of the jury was in harmony with both the scientific knowledge concerning this therapy and the evidence presented at the trial.

In February 2007, Wyeth lost a case in a Philadelphia court where a plaintiff claimed a link between her hormone therapy and development of breast cancer.
