Young drinkers are problematic, it is claimed

24th March 2009

Young people drinking alcohol is “hugely problematic”, it has been claimed.

This comment came from Kim Wiltshire, a community artist from Trafford, who is urging the public to give their views on the government’s policy to provide clear messages for parents and adolescents on the health effects and risks alcohol can cause.

Working with teenagers across Greater Manchester, Ms Wiltshire is trying to explain to them the physical and psychological damage booze can cause.

She remarked it can be a huge problem for youngsters because alcohol is cheap to buy and they see their older family members drinking, causing them to think it is acceptable for them to do so also.

She commented: “I would back any public consultation that highlights this important issue – and would encourage young people to take part and make sure they have their say.”

Last month, the government released a five-point guidance document which is now under consultation with parents, adolescents and carers.

Part of the advice suggests that if 15 to 17-year-olds do drink, it should always be under the guidance of a parent or guardian and should not be a regular occurrence.
