Zimmer secures rights for intelligent surgical tool
Orthopaedic surgical product company Zimmer has announced the acquisition of the intellectual property rights for intelligent surgical instrument technology.
The company has bought the rights to the technology from Medtech, which aims to cut procedure time and reduce the number of instruments required during surgery by helping the surgeon with the positioning of orthopaedic instrumentation.
Zimmer’s new acquired technology rights cover the Zimmer Brigit (bone resection instrument guidance by intelligent telemanipulator) system.
“Zimmer is dedicated to assisting surgeons in improving the accuracy and reproducibility of the steps involved in joint replacement procedures and the Brigit system is a major technological step forward in this effort,” said Ray Elliott, Zimmer Holdings chairman, president and chief executive officer.
“The Brigit system is not a surgical robot but an intelligent tool that provides feedback and guidance to the surgeon throughout the procedure.”
Zimmer has also revealed that it has submitted an application for 510(k) clearance for use of the Brigit system in total knee arthroplasty and that in the future, the system may be used for any process that requires a high level of accuracy.
