UK Study Finds Gap in Preventive Dental Advice Delivery

15th September 2026

A UK-wide study has identified significant gaps between consumer expectations and the delivery of preventive oral healthcare advice, alongside marked regional variation in professional awareness of NHS preventive provision. Published in BDJ Open on 25 August 2026, the research surveyed 505 oral health professionals, 2,000 consumers, and separately 1,004 parents and 1,004 children, providing detailed insights into UK preventive dental communication mismatches and consumer education gaps.

Although most consumers and oral health professionals believed all dental check-ups should include preventive oral healthcare advice, only around half of consumers reported receiving it, and only a third of professionals said they consistently provided it. Only around half of consumers knew that preventive oral healthcare advice was offered through the National Health Service (NHS), and only three-quarters of NHS-affiliated oral health professionals knew that it was offered. Regional variation was marked: awareness of NHS preventive advice provision among professionals ranged from just over 40% in Wales to over 80% in North West England.

Agreement on the importance of preventive care also varied regionally, from around half of professionals in Northern Ireland to a vast majority in Yorkshire and the Humber, while children’s reported dental satisfaction and attendance also varied significantly by region. The study concluded that improvements would require better communication, greater consumer health literacy, and more consistent integration of preventive advice into routine care. The findings position preventive dental communication as a substantial commercial opportunity across dental consumer education platforms, digital patient engagement tools and preventive dental product marketing.

The commercial signal is a maturing UK preventive dentistry market where consumer education gaps and regional inequalities create substantial opportunity for digital patient engagement, tailored consumer communication, and preventive product commercialisation. Expect Colgate-Palmolive, Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, Henry Schein and UK DSO operators (Bupa Dental, Portman, Rodericks, {mydentist}) to sharpen their preventive positioning and consumer engagement platforms through 2027.
