Beyond the Golden Triangle: How Regional Talent Is Shaping UK Biosolutions
The UK’s biosolutions story is getting wider
For years, conversations about UK life science talent have often centred on London, Oxford and Cambridge. Those areas remain important. However, the biosolutions sector is creating a much broader picture.
Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham, Swansea, Edinburgh and Glasgow are all developing specialist capabilities across engineering biology, biomanufacturing, fermentation and sustainable materials. The BIA describes this as a network of specialised regional ecosystems rather than one dominant cluster.
That matters for employers. It also changes where they look for talent.
Regional expertise is becoming commercially valuable
Biosolutions companies are solving very different problems depending on where their expertise sits.
Manchester-based Bright Biotech is working on plant-based production of growth factors. Bristol’s Extracellular focuses on cell-based production and scale-up. In Swansea, ProColl is developing humanised collagen for applications including regenerative medicine and cell therapy. Glasgow-based SOLASTA Bio is applying engineering biology to crop protection.
These businesses need more than scientific specialists as they grow.
Commercial development, partnerships, technical sales and market strategy become increasingly important when a technology moves closer to customers. A business development professional who understands the science behind a biosolution can often have a very different conversation with a potential partner than someone approaching the opportunity from a purely commercial perspective.
That blend of knowledge is becoming increasingly valuable in life science recruitment.
Candidates are noticing the regional opportunity
One interesting shift we see in recruitment conversations is that candidates are becoming more open to regional biotech hubs when the role offers genuine scope.
For some commercial professionals, joining a smaller biosolutions company can mean being much closer to the decision-making process. They may have direct contact with founders, investors and technical teams. Their work can also have a visible connection to the company’s next stage of growth.
That can be attractive for people who want more ownership over their career.
For employers, the opportunity is to communicate what makes their particular location and business worth choosing. Location still matters. The nature of the opportunity matters more.
Building teams around the ecosystem
Regional growth can also help companies develop longer-term talent pipelines.
Universities and specialist research centres provide a foundation. Local biotech companies give people somewhere to build commercial experience. As businesses scale, experienced professionals can move between organisations without necessarily leaving the region.
This can support retention too. Someone who has built a career around a particular regional life science cluster may have several reasons to remain there if the local ecosystem continues to expand.
For Life Science Recruiters, understanding these regional differences is increasingly useful. A candidate who may not fit a traditional London-based search could be an excellent match for a growing biosolutions company elsewhere in the UK.
A more connected UK life science market
The UK biosolutions sector has already attracted £1.46 billion in equity investment since 2018. Its regional spread could become one of its strengths as companies move from promising technology towards commercial scale.
At Zenopa, we work with life science, medical device and pharmaceutical organisations across the US, EU and UK.

The most interesting part of the regional story may be what happens next. As more companies grow outside the traditional hubs, the UK’s life science talent map could start looking very different from the one employers have relied on for years.
