Beyond the AI Pilot: The People UK Biotech Needs to Scale
Biotech has the tools. Now it needs the people to use them.
AI has moved quickly into UK biotech. It is being used across drug discovery, clinical development, data analysis and research. Investment is following too. UK biotech venture funding reached £2.05 billion in Q2 2026, with AI-led drug discovery attracting significant attention.
Yet many companies are still working out how to turn promising AI projects into something that supports the wider business.
For hiring managers, this is starting to change the conversation. The question is no longer simply whether someone has worked with AI. It is whether they understand how technology fits into the scientific and commercial side of a biotech organisation.
The skills are becoming more specialised
AI in biotech rarely sits neatly within one department. A commercial leader may need to understand how an AI platform creates value for pharmaceutical partners. A business development professional might need enough technical knowledge to explain a platform without losing sight of the customer. Product and strategy teams need people who can connect scientific capabilities with commercial opportunities.
That combination can be difficult to find.
From a Biotech recruitment perspective, we are seeing candidates become more interested in roles where they can work across these boundaries. Commercial professionals want exposure to technology. Technical candidates are increasingly interested in the business side of biotech. The strongest profiles often sit somewhere between the two.
Data is changing the hiring conversation
The BIA’s recent analysis points to data infrastructure as a major factor holding AI projects back. Biotech companies have no shortage of information. The difficulty can be bringing data together in a consistent and usable way.
That has implications for recruitment.
Companies investing in AI may need commercial talent with a much stronger understanding of data, alongside data specialists who understand the realities of life sciences. Hiring only for the technology can leave a gap between what the platform can do and what customers actually need.
This is where experienced Biotech Recruiters can often spot a difference between an impressive CV and someone who will work well within a growing biotech environment.
Keeping good people matters
AI-focused biotech businesses are also competing for talent outside traditional life sciences. A data scientist or commercial AI specialist can have opportunities across technology, healthcare and pharma.
Candidates therefore look closely at what they will actually be working on. They want to see that AI is being used meaningfully rather than sitting within a collection of pilot projects.
That can have a direct effect on retention. When employees can see how their work contributes to drug development, partnerships or commercial growth, the role tends to feel more tangible.
The next stage is human as much as technical
The UK has strong scientific foundations and investor interest in AI-led biotech is growing. The next phase may depend on how effectively companies bring together scientific expertise, technology and commercial experience.
At Zenopa, we work with life science, medical device and pharmaceutical organisations across the US, EU and UK.

For hiring managers, the interesting part of the AI story may not be the next model or platform. It may be the people who know how to turn that technology into something a biotech business can actually use.
