Why UK Life Sciences Still Has the Right Ingredients for Growth
More than great science
When companies decide where to build a life science business, access to good science is only one part of the decision.
The UK has a much broader proposition. Universities, biotech clusters, the NHS, investors and specialist talent sit within a relatively connected ecosystem. That gives emerging companies access to many of the ingredients they need as they move from early research towards clinical development and commercial growth.
There is also plenty of investment behind that ecosystem. UK life sciences attracted more than £3 billion in public and private investment over the 12 months to July 2026. The Government is also targeting 66,000 additional life sciences roles by 2035.
For employers, that growth creates an interesting talent market.
The commercial talent is becoming just as important
A strong scientific pipeline can get a biotech company noticed. Building the commercial side is what helps turn that potential into a sustainable business.
This is where roles across business development, commercial strategy, market access and partnerships become increasingly important. As companies progress through clinical development, they need people who understand the science but can also build relationships with pharmaceutical partners, investors and healthcare stakeholders.
From a life science recruitment perspective, this is something we regularly see in conversations with candidates. People are increasingly interested in companies where they can have a visible impact on growth. They want to know what stage the pipeline is at and what their role will look like as the business develops.
That can make smaller UK biotech companies particularly attractive when the opportunity is clearly defined.
Talent is spread across the UK
London, Oxford and Cambridge remain major centres for life science innovation. They are no longer the whole story.
Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff are developing their own strengths through universities, NHS partnerships, specialist facilities and growing investment networks.
For hiring managers, this creates more options when building teams. It also gives candidates opportunities to develop their careers without necessarily moving to the traditional biotech hubs.
The expansion of these regional clusters could become increasingly valuable as companies look for specialist commercial and scientific talent.
Keeping people as companies scale
Hiring someone into a growing biotech is only the beginning. The role often changes quickly. A business development position at a 20-person company can look very different once the organisation reaches its next funding or clinical milestone.
Candidates pay attention to that progression.
They want to understand whether there is room to grow with the company rather than simply fill a position today. Employers that communicate that journey clearly can often create stronger long-term relationships with their people.
This is an area where experienced Life Science Recruiters can provide useful market perspective. Understanding why candidates move, what they value and what makes them stay can be just as valuable as finding the initial shortlist.
A strong ecosystem still needs strong people
The UK has research strength, investment, healthcare infrastructure and a growing focus on commercialisation. Government policy is now placing further emphasis on turning those advantages into long-term economic growth.
At Zenopa, we work with life science, medical device and pharmaceutical organisations across the US, EU and UK.

The UK may have many of the ingredients needed to build successful life science companies. What makes those ingredients work together is the people who bring the science, commercial thinking and relationships into the same room.
