How is Technology supporting the Farming Industry?
There are very few sectors that have not been affected in some way by the global pandemic. The worldwide agricultural market, however, has been able to pull through and profit despite the economic circumstances surrounding it. Over the last 30 years, it’s shown an annual growth of almost 4%, and in the UK the farming industry is worth approximately £108 billion, generating close to £18 billion worth of gross export earnings for the country per year.
Advances in farming technology are set to push these figures even higher – which comes as no surprise given the reliance of technology on so much of our daily lives. According to a BlueWeave report, the Digital Farming market is estimated to be worth $10.23bn by 2025, as companies look to employ more and more innovative tools and cutting-edge IT to streamline their operations and meet increasing demands.
Smart Farming has been revolutionising operations even further, by adopting processes that measure plant and animal responses against crop yields in order to improve animal welfare and produce healthier crops – all in real-time, and mostly through mobile technology. Smart Farms use reliable accurate data to make the best decisions, and forward-thinking farmers have been eager to follow suit.
Whilst the application of technology in a farmer’s everyday role is no new concept – farmers and scientists have been developing sophisticated machinery and tech for centuries – the far-reaching ability of modern systems allows for an all-round efficient and reliable practice. Even in the midst of economic struggles the world over, it’s a good sign that innovations in digital agriculture are continuing and upcoming tech startups are helping to push the boundaries and disrupt the status quo.
