How to Change your Career

19th January 2018

With the mornings starting to get a little lighter, we can start to see the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. With lots of ‘New Year New You’ resolutions and promises to be healthier and fitter this year, this new you maybe thinking a career change could be exactly what you need..

The good thing is that it’s never too late to take that leap of faith no matter what your age is. We at Zenopa have found that many of our partners value working life experiences and wisdom just as much as having the correct qualifications.

Does this sound like you but you’re not sure on where to start? Here we have some helpful hints to help you can make it happen.

Think about what you want

Think about the parts of your current role you like and the bits that you don’t like. Do you like working with people or individually? Do you want a role with progression or are you looking for a role with very little responsibility? Making a list will help you to think about what role you are looking to move into, and if you decide to use an agency this will help them to pin point job roles for you.

Consider your finances:

Changing your career could mean that you may have to look at taking a pay cut. Find out what the salary expectations are to start off with and then what they potentially could grow into. This will then help you to plan how you will manage the change, and if it would be feasible.

Be proactive:

You maybe dreading the thought of rejection when looking to change your career because you’re worried about not having the correct experience or skills. Maybe you don’t have the funding to be able to retrain. The best advice we can give here is to conduct some research before making any decisions. Look into what training opportunities are available within your desired field, and see whether you would be entitled to any financial help. Research businesses that work within the new area of interest and if you are in a position to, contact them and see if you can volunteer or shadow an employer to gain some experience.

Network and seek advice:

Networking is one of the best ways to get pointers on how you can break into the industry. Also people talk and know people, which can lead to introductions and they might be able to put in a good word for you.

Evaluate what you can offer:

If you think you are a good enough position to be able to think about changing your career, you need to now look at working on your CV and how you will sell yourself to potential employers.

It’s important to communicate through your CV how and why you are suitable for the role. To help you get started, you could make a list of all of your stand out skills and experience. Try to be realistic so that you avoid any disappointment if it doesn’t work out after applying for a role. Zenopa offers support and advice to candidates when it comes to writing their CV and our consultants will be able to offer advice on how to showcase these skills.
