How to Prepare for a Degree Apprentice Interview

24th July 2023

Congratulations on getting your first interview! The first interview can be a mix of excitement and nervousness, but with preparation and a positive attitude, you can make a great impression. Here are some things you can expect in your first interview:

Introduction and icebreaker: The interview will likely begin with some small talk to help you feel more comfortable. They may ask about your journey to the interview location or any interests you have in common.

Questions about your resume and experience: Be prepared to discuss your resume and any relevant work experience, education, or projects you have listed. They might ask you to elaborate on certain aspects of your background.

Behavioral questions: Expect questions that assess how you handle situations, challenges, and interactions with others. These questions are designed to understand your problem-solving skills, teamwork, and ability to deal with difficult situations.

Technical questions (if applicable): For technical roles, you may encounter questions related to your specific skillset and expertise. This could involve problem-solving exercises, coding challenges, or technical discussions.

Company and role-related questions: The interviewer may ask why you’re interested in working for their company and why you’re a good fit for the role. Do your research about the company and the position beforehand.

Questions from you: Towards the end of the interview, they will likely ask if you have any questions. Be prepared with thoughtful questions about the company culture, team dynamics, or anything else that demonstrates your interest in the role.

Closing the interview: The interviewer will likely explain the next steps in the hiring process and when you can expect to hear back from them.

Tips for a successful first interview:

Research the company: Familiarize yourself with the company’s mission, values, products/services, and recent news. This knowledge will help you tailor your answers and demonstrate your genuine interest.

Practice common interview questions: Rehearse your responses to typical interview questions, especially behavioral questions. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.

Dress appropriately: Dress professionally based on the company culture and the position you’re applying for. When in doubt, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

Show enthusiasm and confidence: Smile, maintain eye contact, and exhibit enthusiasm for the opportunity. Confidence is important, but remember to strike a balance and avoid coming across as arrogant.

Follow-up with a thank-you note: After the interview, send a thank-you email to the interviewer, expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position.

Remember that interviews are a two-way street – they’re evaluating you, but you’re also evaluating them to see if it’s the right fit for you. Stay positive, be yourself, and use the opportunity to showcase your skills and personality. Good luck!
