Knocking your interviewer for six and securing your dream job

14th August 2013

Thud – the dull sound of the interviewer falling backward off their chair, their body hitting the ground with a surprised yet impressed expression tattooed upon their face.

You (the candidate), sitting across from them, having just unleashed the telling blow. Your question, like a coiled spring has been released at the precise moment to knock them for 6. The job, is all but yours; glory and success at your finger tips. All that remains……..is to help them back up.

The aim of this is not to encourage violence during an interview, it is unlikely that this will go down well, unless you happen to be interviewing for the latest Bruce Lee style action film! However, it is designed to be a metaphorical depiction of how asking the right questions at the end of an interview can help secure you your dream role.

Not everyone takes full advantage of their chance to determine the conversation at an interview – ask relevant, worthwhile and intelligent questions. This is a chance for you to show the interviewer that you have taken a real interest in the role and have a strong understanding of their company/ market place and importantly, how things are changing – so ask about the NHS changes and their impact, their strategies for success, competitor product launches, the ways they are adapting to different patient treatment methods, the feedback you got from one of their clients, the information one of their employees gave you, etc. Avoid purely asking the basic questions.

Use your research and knowledge to ask questions that will impress your potential employer. It will help sell yourself for the role and separate you from the other people in the process.
