Scientific Committee Warns Deindustrialisation Threatens Net-Zero Goals
The UK’s journey toward achieving net-zero emissions is encountering significant hurdles, as highlighted by a recent Parliamentary and Scientific Committee meeting. Hosted by IChemE, the session emphasized that without strategic investment in manufacturing, improved policy frameworks, and a diversified workforce, the UK risks being left behind in the global race toward sustainability. Key voices from the engineering and policy sectors, including IChemE’s President Mark Apsey and MP Chris McDonald, stressed the urgent need for action.
The UK has witnessed a concerning degree of deindustrialisation, with a focus on neglecting the manufacturing sector in favour of financial services. Despite the steel industry contributing £1.8 billion to the economy in 2023, production has hit historic lows.
McDonald warns that enhancing manufacturing investments rather than prioritizing financial services could attract international capital to regions equipped with industrial infrastructures. The upcoming demand for 735,000 new engineering jobs by 2030 underlines the urgency to reform workforce strategies, notably enhancing gender diversity and addressing the educator shortfall in STEM fields.
As the UK strives to meet its net-zero goals, addressing the deindustrialisation issue and building a more diverse and robust engineering workforce is crucial. Solutions lie in strategic investments and reformed education policies to bridge the gap. With these efforts, the UK can better position itself in the competitive global landscape while safeguarding regional economic growth.
